Arachne
The Greek Gods of Mount Olympus were jealous of its power, sometimes of each other and as in most families there was often arguments among each other. They were united by tolerance of mortals who dared defy them, the arrogance was called hubris, which is always punished by Nemesis.
Arachne was a country maiden who was famous for her weaving skills. No one on Earth had such skill with weaving. Some people say that Athena could weave as good as Arachne. Arachne boasted about this with others, but never bothered to think it was a gift from the gods. Instead she took complete credit. Her designs were graceful and pretty. Sometimes wood nymphs would come and watch. After some time all this boasting was heard by Athena herself and she decided to challenge Arachne. One day Athena just appeared next to Arachne. She told her the design was nice. Arachne told her no mortal has ever been as good as I old woman. "Those are rash words." said Athena. "Well it's true", said Arachne. Well at least among the Immortals one is better than you. And who might that be? The goddess Athena. Arachne laughed not even Athena can weave as well as I. The nymphs told Arachne that her words were foolish. "Surely you don't mean what you say," said Athena. I mean what I say and I shall prove it. Prove it then. Athena told Arachne that she has heard her boasting and has watched her. I shall now teach you a lesson on defying the Gods. The competition began and soon they were both done. Athena won the competition. Because Arachne had insuted Athena, Athena turned her into a spider. Ever since then spiders, children of Arachne, have gotten revenge on children of Athena. Her Roman name is Minerva.
