Poseidon was so happy with his kingdom, that he built an underwater city, including a coral palace. He needed a queen, so he chose the most beautiful water nymph. But he heard a prophecy that any son the water nymph bore him would probably overthrow him. So, Poseidon chose a new wife, another water nymph, her name was Amphitrite, who at first was proud to be the queen of the ocean. But soon she started to regret it. Like his brother Zeus, Poseidon was unfaithful as a husband. He constanly was running or swimming after beautiful women. He never spent much time in his kingdom, but traveled through the universe a lot, where he found beautiful and willing maidens, attracted by his power and riches. It was said he has had more than 100 children. He was also a difficult god, changeable and arguemental, hardly ever forgave. When angry, he let loose the waves to make storms and hurricanes, which might destroy whole parts of the Earth. However, none of these powers could reach Olympus. He was like a practical joker who frightened other gods and humans by making monsters like the octopus and the blowfish. When he stilled loved Amphitrite, he made the dolphin as a gift to her of his love. According to some legends killing a dolphin was an insult to Poseidon.Soon, he wasn't happy with just his kingdom and started looking for places on land. He picked a city called Attica, close to the ocean so he could reach it easily. Placing his trident on the land meant he had claimed it so that is what he did. But Attica didn't want Poseidon as their ruler. He was told to be cruel and greedy, and if he was mad, would tear apart the city. So they begged Zeus for mercy. But he did not listen, but Athena did, so she came down and planted an olive tree. Poseidon was enraged! He quickly created a huge storm, which made a whole fishing fleet go out to sea. That only made them not want him more. So again they appealed to Zeus, but the difference was this time he listened. He declared Athena as the ruler and her gift sacred to Attica which was changed to Athens. After that the people of Athens had to be careful of the sea. They were also at an disadvantage in sea battles. One day after he woke up from sleeping on Olympus he started to favor Demeter. Demeter is acutally his sister but that didn't matter to him. She ended up fooling him because she actually didn't like any of the gifts he gave her. Since he had a short attention span her plan worked and he forgot all about Demeter. Poseidon created the horse, but he didn't get it on the first try. He ended up making a giraffe, a zebra, and a camel. Later on he created tiny sea horses one of the most loved animals in the world. Poseidon's Roman name is Neptune.
